A hike through the moon-like terrain of the black desert and lateral craters of Piano Del Lago, above 2500m on the South side of Etna. The hybrid solution for hiking the typically volcanic area just under the summit active craters, ascending with the iconic gondola lift from the touristic station on the South flank at 1900m until 2500m and then hiking up.
This trip takes you high up to cross a characteristic landscape composed of pyroclastic cones, recent lava fields, endemic vegetation living in extreme conditions and sharp carpets of lava rocks.

Recommended equipment: Long trousers, backpack, wind/rain jacket (can be rented), fleece and gloves (cold season only), hiking sticks (optional, provided), cap, sunscreen, snack
Meeting point
Rifugio Sapienza (Etna Sud): can be reached by provinciale road 92 (SP92) or from da Zafferana Etnea (Eastern side) or from Nicolosi (South-Eastern side). It is a well-paved, two-lane tourist road that can be traveled by any means of transport. At the meeting point there is large free and paid parking available with a bar, toilets and catering available.

Our hikes and tours start from meeting points that can be comfortably reached by road. The meeting times and locations are different with different tour options and throughout the year. These will be confirmed when booking each hike.
All the hikes that reach middle or high altitude and the active craters can be limited by volcanic activity, temporary restrictions, harsh weather, snow/ice coverage or other major inconveniences. Instead, if the hike or tour is cancelled by the partecipant, our cancellation policy is the following:
No fee until 48 hours before the trip
50% cancellation fee until 24 hours before the trip
100% cancellation fee on the day of the trip
Participants must follow all instructions provided before and during the excursion by the guide(s). Any action different from these will be excluded from insurance coverage.
