This excursion takes you to high altitudes to pass through a characteristic landscape, composed of pyroclastic cones, recent lava fields, endemic vegetation living in extreme conditions, and sharp carpets of volcanic rock.

Description

An excursion through the lunar landscape of the black desert and the lateral craters of Piano Del Lago, above 2,500m on the South side of Mount Etna. The hybrid solution for walking in the volcanic area immediately below the active summit craters, ascending with the iconic cable car from the tourist station on the South side at 1,900m up to 2,500m, and then continuing on a trek.
In the evening version, the descent is completed at night with headlamps along the sandy slopes below.

This hike takes you at high altitude to pass through a distinctive landscape composed of pyroclastic cones, recent lava fields, endemic vegetation living in extreme conditions, and sharp volcanic rock mats.

Difficulty level

Very easy

These are tours that do not involve significant physical activity and are suitable for families with very young children and people with walking limitations.

Easy-Intermediate

Hikes can be taken by most people in good health, families with active lifestyles and by children who are used to the outdoors.

Intermediate

Trails are best suited for people who are in good physical conditions and fit, with some hiking experience and who can handle higher altitudes.

Hard

Trails are dedicated to people with a high fitness level that have done similar hikes before and who can handle long ascents, high altitude and prolonged exercise.

Equipment

Required equipment: Trekking boots (also available for rent), helmets (provided), 1.5L water

Suggested equipment: Long trousers, backpack, rain/wind jacket (also available for rent), sweatshirt and gloves (cold season), trekking poles (optional, provided), hat, sunscreen, snacks

Further information

Our hikes and tours start from meeting points that can be comfortably reached by road. The meeting times and locations are different with different tour options and throughout the year. These will be confirmed when booking each hike.

All the hikes that reach middle or high altitude and the active craters can be limited by volcanic activity, temporary restrictions, harsh weather, snow/ice coverage or other major inconveniences. Instead, if the hike or tour is cancelled by the partecipant, our cancellation policy is the following:

No fee until 48 hours before the trip
50% cancellation fee until 24 hours before the trip
100% cancellation fee on the day of the trip

Participants must follow all instructions provided before and during the excursion by the guide(s). Any action different from these will be excluded from insurance coverage.
